Focus on your ONE Thing to Attain New Year's Resolution

Was one of your New Year‘s resolution to lose weight, eat healthier, or get more exercise? Ok great - now you’ve resolved to do this but how are you going to actually achieve your goal? Research shows that only about 8% of people achieve their New Year’s resolution goals. Science has been studying why we make these resolutions, but more importantly how we can keep them. Here are some points to focus on in attaining your goal.
  • Identify your ONE Thing.
  • Get clarity around your purpose.
  • Build productive habits into your daily life that empower you.
  • Protect your ONE Thing time.

Keep it Simple

The average person has a busy life, with competing priorities, so keeping resolutions short and simple provide a better opportunity for success. It’s exciting and uplifting to set ambitious resolutions, but our excietment fades quickly as we get back to our daily grind. Keeping the goals rational with achievable metrics is a design for lasting results. Whittle your New Year's goals down to a simple and succinct vision statement. Then ask yourself: “What’s the ONE Thing you can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”* This will help you bring into focus your actions that will help you to reach your goal.  As an example: “What’s the ONE thing that I can do (today) to lose weight (this year), such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”

Become Single-Minded

Become single minded, focus on purpose, and priority. Often we fail because we are trying to do too much too fast. Start slow and don’t let failure or a setback keep you from reaching your goal. The Mayo Clinic suggests using what they call the yes-to-stress ratio to determine if committing to something is going to overextend you and ultimately lead to stress.

Establish Accountability

Find a weight loss or exercise partner. It’s easier to get up earlier and go workout if you have a buddy to do it with. This is the person that you will be able to turn to when you are losing steam or facing a setback, or that will cheer you on.

Protect Your Goal

We all want to more in our life, which usually ends up meaning more things to do. There will be times that you will be faced with the challenge of cutting out an activity for achieving your goal, in order to attend to another task. There will be times that you will need to say no, don’t let it be the activity that is part of attaining your goal. It’s easy to cut the workout short for something in another area of your life that needs tending to. Be creative with your scheduling don’t rule out getting up earlier, or cutting out the stop at Starbucks before work. Only the ability to dismiss distractions and concentrate on your ONE Thing stands between you and your goals.

Make it Fun

If losing weight isn’t your passion in life, then making it fun well keep you on the road to success. Research and prepare some quick light great tasting meals. Sign up with a friend for a foot race, then you have a reason to workout. Buy a fitness tracker wristband. Nike is the leader in this area with its Fuelband lineup, Fitbit and Jawbone are great fun trackers that give you Fuel points for all types of activities. It’s fun to track the activities everything from walking around the kitchen to bike riding.

You are on your way to attaining success in you New Year’s resolution goals! These principles of success came from Gary Keller’s The ONE Thing book, which can be applied to any goal setting in your life.

14th Annual Savannah Pride Festival

A Pride celebration is for everyone. An opportunity to celebrate who we are, and the joy of our differences. This weekend we will be celebrating the true nature of ourselves, all of us, whoever we are, whatever our heritage, gender, or sexual identity, at the Savannah Pride festival in Forsyth Park. And a celebration it will be! In celebration of years past the atmosphere during the day has been one of joy, the air was filled with music and laughter. This year will be like years past with even more to celebrate regarding achieving equality among us.

Savannah Pride festival is different from others in the nation, because as president of Savannah Pride Mark Hill has said “ We don’t sequester ourselves away. It is a community picnic where we see friends and make some new ones.” There will be plenty going on during the day at this park-wide picnic. Dozens of vendors and lots of local talent. Stop by our tent (Don Callahan Real Estate Group) for a chance to win an iPad mini! We hope to see you there.

Surfers For Autism a Transformative Event

I awoke with excitement and anticipation and organized myself to head out to Tybee Island for the 3rd Annual Coastal Surfers for Autism event this past Saturday. This is our biggest and favorite charitable event we participate in every year. By the time my feet hit the warm sand there were some 20 tents set up and several hundred people gathered. There was a wonderful breeze and the surf was definitely up! Finally after some introductions and a prayer the surfing began.

Miracles Happen

Family and friends stood at waters edge as they watched the kids go apprehensively out on surfboards with their supportive team. Then miracles began to unfold before us. As each surfboard loaded with a belly down child clinging to the sides returned on a wave, there were huge smiles and giggles of tickled pleasure. Soon we began to see the children begin to stand on their board and catch a wave. At each successful wave surfed, teams, family members and the young surfers would jump and throw their arms in the air in jubilation. The transformation from uncertainty to confidence and success was mesmerizing. One of the family members Joe Costello said it best with a post on his Facebook:

"Thank you for the smile on my son Sean's face! Thank you to the professionals from SFA, Tybee Police, Tybee Fire, Tybee Ocean Rescue, volunteers, and businesses who made this a wonderful event. I watched another boy cry hysterically on his first set, the next wave he popped up and rode it in to the beach to the cheers of all. It is overwhelming all that you did this past Saturday for so many. This was our first event, but it will not be our last."

Fun Under The Tents

Although surfing was the main event there was much bonding and fun being had in the sand under the tents. The loving, warm, friendly energy was palpable. There was an atmosphere of non-judgment and ease in connecting with others. Everyone was partaking in fun activities out of the water, and bonding with new found friends. The energy of the day spread to everyone.
"David Costrini: I'm not exaggerating when I say that I went to this event, and that it was one of the most amazing and powerful things I've ever seen. The kids, families, and volunteers were just over the top incredible and inspiring."
I was told this would be a life changing event, and it was. I am already thinking about next year, as I am sure the children are too. Maybe we will see you out there next year?

Tips for Savannah's St. Patrick's Day Celebration

As the city prepares for the annual St. Patrick's Day parade and celebration, we thought we'd share some tips to make Saturday a fun event for all.

PARADE: The Annual Savannah St. Patrick's Day Parade winds its way through the heart of Downtown Savannah. The parade begins at Abercorn and Gwinnett and ends at Bull and Harris. Get Downtown early to grab a great spot along the route to take in the festivities. See the parade route on a map: http://www.savannahstpats.com/site/ssp/parade/

PARKING: Parking is at a premium. City parking garages are open, but be prepared for a $15 event fee to park. Street parking will be free, but scarce. Alternatives include one of three city shuttles from Southside, Islands or Westside for only $3. Shuttles run from 8am-11am and return noon-3pm. More info on shuttles: http://www.catchacat.org/CAT_System/NewRoutes/St__Patricks_Day/index.html

LIVE MUSIC: There's plenty of live music to go around. Bands will be performing throughout the day at City Market, Wild Wings, and River Street. Band Lineup here: http://www.savannahstpats.com/site/ssp/bands/

FOOD: There are plenty of restaurants open around town for breakfast and beyond. But, be prepared to wait in line. The city is expecting up to one million people for the event! If you want to check out an annual Savannah St. Patrick's day tradition, head on over to Wesley Monumental Church (Abercorn St. at Calhoun Square) for their PANCAKE Breakfast. Adults $5, kids $3.
